A New Kind of
World War II Story
Music, book, and lyrics by
Julie Cramer Gallivan
Janey’s War is an original musical telling the story of the home front during World War II and the defining choices of one woman as she faces the battles of life in a world at war.
For Julie Cramer Gallivan,
a World War II Story Decades in the Making Finally Comes to Life
Conceived more than 20 years ago while Julie was a theater student at Brown University, Janey’s War began as a spark of inspiration that she would carry for decades. After a semester abroad at the Moscow Art Theatre, Julie shifted her focus to International Relations, determined to understand the world more fully. Despite having turned her focus away from theater for a time, the melodies and characters of Janey’s War never left her, taking up residence in her mind and heart for years – until now.
Passionate about telling a World War II story, Julie shaped the musical around the experiences of families separated by the battlefront, the meaning of the links between generations, the universal struggles of building a life against the backdrop of events beyond our control, and the vital contributions made on the home front.
Julie feels a sense of urgency and hope that she can play a part in building a bridge of memory, connection, and appreciation for our shared past during this unique moment in history before the last living memories of such an important time fade into the past.
For Julie, in addition to being a musical that she is excited and passionate to create, it is also a love letter to a generation that she is grateful to every day. More than anything, Julie’s hope is to offer up this musical as an ode of gratitude to the generation that sacrificed so much to secure the freedoms we enjoy today.
